Below points are the observations of the writer concerning the present state of affair of the students and necessary steps that should be taken by the university management in other to develop the state of affair of the students and not only the students but the University at large.
1) DEPRECIATING ASSETS;
throughout the African nations, Obafemi Awolowo University has been known with a well-known argot’’ African most Beautiful Campus’’ back in those days with novel pride and novel designs most especially best structure buildings in Africa. Now all these then best buildings in African need to be renovated with a well deserve renovation not renopainting, the current VC and Senate must seek the attention of Federal government in other to raise funds for the university and ensure this particular money is use for the purpose it is meant. Furthermore, the university management should not just take to the street when their salary or allowance has not been paid, they should find a radical manner to wake the consciousness of the federal government concerning what students are going through on campus, University management should find a means peaceful protest or a round table talk with federal government in other to persuade the federal government about the positive consequence of investment on education, most of these politicians know nothing about the investment on education because majority of them graduated with pseudo certificate
2) BOTTLE-NECK ON LEARNING FACILITIES; Teacher-to-student ratio is very high and ridiculous, students have lecturer taking them in overpopulated classrooms with little or no teaching equipment, a very good example is 1000 sitter that can only occupy 1000 students as its name implies (this particular lecture theatre will be allocated for the thousands of students), though some may not sit comfortable because of unhealthy seats. These are the actions we want the university management to look into.
3) DERIVATION OF PLEASURE IN STUDENTS’ FAILURE; Most lecturers derive pleasure when students fail, most of them will say there is nothing you can write to satisfy your lecturer, lecturers will be happy when they take a course and out of 1500 who register the course, 2A, 15b,45C, 200D and 300E and the rest retake the course, it always house of failure baffles me when any lecturer see this as an achievement, everything is students’ fault, some will register courses where result will never release. White house and Yellow house have always been house failure for the majority of students and senate have turned defiant to the ways and manners these students are being taught.
DMISSION OF MORE STUDENTS WITH LIMITED FACILITIES;
This is directly responsible for congestion,
Other issues including mass failure and breeding of uncultured students. If limited facilities can be provided this will surely aid effective learning, you dare not compare when a lecturer takes class of 70 students in a class meant to be occupied by 30 students, throug this, the amount of mass failure will exceed to ridiculous rate
4) ANTI-STUDENTS POLICIES; Different policies have been implemented by the current VC like accommodation policy, transportation policy and the likes which are not in favour of students. A very good example is that of accommodation policy which doesn’t take the normal approach to limit the number of students staying in halls of residence, the victims of this policies will surely be freshers who are not yet aware of what OAU exams look like. The only solution to this accommodation itch is to build more hostels ,the university management should take building of hostels as their number one priority because by sending 95% of students off campus where their lives and properties are not secure, Furthermore, concerning the transportation policy, the university management doesn’t know where the evil lies by reducing the amount of commercial buses on campus where majority of the lecturers schedule their lecture by 7pm this will only lead to mass failure.
5) CREATIVITY AND RESEARCH;
Students are not taught to relate course content with practical happening, you can’t compare what are being taught to what you read online, some lecturers are still in the habit of using their 1990s note to take their current students, I wonder if lecturers refuse to make research about new theory and such lecturers will be expecting something new or dynamic from the students, gone are the days when Obafemi Awolowo University lecturers were always in fore front in terms of research.
MOBILISATION FOR NYSC;
One of the typical flaws of Obafemi Awolowo University is their manner of mobilisation of the graduates to serve their father land.
Though, it may be my jaundice view concerning what have heard before concerning their manner of mobilisation but OAU has been in the habit of mobilising graduates lately compare to other institutions who usually mobilise their graduate within six months while it usually takes OAU a year.
Concerning this late mobilisation of the graduate I will enjoin the university management to please Improve this defect since the spirit of continuous strike has been eliminated in the school calendar.
The purpose of writing this is not to troll the university managment but voice out the loudless voice of the students, most students are suffering internally but they dare not voice out because of imminent rustication.
