The highest ranked university in Nigeria is Obefemi Awolowo University. OAU is located in Ife-Ife and is owned and operated by the Nigerian government.

Founded in 1962, OAU attained a respected reputation through the 1970s and 80s as one of the best colleges on the African continent. The university offers a number of degrees through its 82 departments. OAU boasts a Nobel Laureate and four National Merit Award winners among its graduates. The motto of the school is "for learning and culture," but due to the rigorous demands of its curriculum, some of the students have jokingly misquoted it as "for learning and torture."
