If you are a hostel student , group study is the best option. Your method of solving a problem could actually be tedious but your friend might know a shortcut; this saves time. 

If your lecturer is the one who prepares the question, try to guess what she/he might ask. Put yourselves in her/his shoes and frame the questions. Give importance to the topics that the lecturer took a great deal of time to complete. Would you not ask questions from the topic which you gave extra attention? In the same way skip the ones the prof. took very little time, like the prof. might have went way off the topic and started talking her personal experiences and current affairs.
 Those are the ones that the prof. had little preparation. If you are not an attentive listener to classes go through the notes of an attentive student for these important details.. 90% of the time this  method worked for me. Instead of listening to the lecture. I try to deduce these 'stresses' the prof gives to a topic.  If it's a short test with lesser portions you have greater chance that the questions you guessed are gonna appear in the qn paper. We humans have inherent  attention to non-verbal communication. Look out for them, it'll be fun, try it ;) 

Once you have an estimated question sample, finish the easy ones first, NEVER start with the hard ones... two advantages of doing so ... one it will boost your confidence and two you need to input as much as possible within the short period, why waste time with hard ones? 

ALWAYS have a scratch paper by the side, scribble all the important points. your hard disk cant handle that much data, share the load to different centres of your brain... 
and finally try to have fun while studying, the book you are staring at is not a mere jumble of meaning less words, visualise the derivations, connect theories with stories, hell even make rap songs of formulas and make simple mnemonics... To make mnemonics, ask yourselves what's the first thing that pops into your mind when you see this qn, frame the mnemonic according to that. Make them funny.
