apologised to Gabriel Jesus after denying him the chance to write his name in Manchester City folklore.

Guardiola blocked the Brazilian from taking the 85th-minute penalty against Liverpool, which would have secured City’s first league win at Anfield for 15 years.

Instead Riyad Mahrez stepped up to take the spot kick – awarded after Virgil van Dijk brought down Leroy Sane – and blazed his effort high over the bar.

After the goalless draw, Guardiola said: “He (Jesus) wanted to take it. I apologise.

“During the training sessions I see him every take the penalties and it gave me a lot of confidence. It will be a good experience for him. Next time it will go in.

“The last five, six, seven months it was always Sergio - but he was on the bench.”

Jesus is City’s second choice penalty-taker after Aguero, which is why Guardiola’s insistence that Mahrez take duties came as such a surprise.

But the Catalan insisted he was happy to end a run of three straight defeats at Anfield.

“I am so comfortable with the performance we have done,” he added. “I am so comfortable with the performance we have done. They didn’t have one shot on target.
