Tea, coffee, hot cocoa, whatever you enjoy that also has a little caffeine in it. Emphasis on a little, because if you're too wired, you won't be able to focus. Reading should be relaxing.
Snacks. As you define snacks. (Personally, I require chocolate.)
A comfortable chair with good lighting. Don't read in bed unless it's your only option.
Try as much as possible not to carry your cellphone alongside with you when you are going to read ,either library or lecture room, for effective reading, you don't need your cellphone all you need is your reading materials like textbook and the likes.
Turn off all electronics that might bother you with noises or interruptions. If it makes you antsy to miss messages, time in some texting breaks, like once every two hours for 15 minutes. Let your friends know that you can't talk or text right now. Then put your phone, etc. in a different room than the one where you are going to read.
Really invest yourself in the story. The Grapes of Wrath is one of the most moving human interest stories ever written. You will get a lot out of it if you can see it like a movie in your head while you're reading it. (Plus you'll enjoy it more.)
If you are a male or female, don't read with any partner or else you won't be able acheive or comprehend your purpose.
Have fun, and don't push yourself too hard, because if you do you won't enjoy it, and you may decide you don't like reading novels. Which would be a shame.
