Why It Is Not Wrong To Say My Names Are

It isn’t wrong, it’s just not normal usage.

Usually, we ask someone what is your name? and they reply my name is John, or my name is John Smith, or my name is John Edward Smith, depending on how much information they believe is required.

(A police officer undoubtedly wants at least their first name and surname; somebody they just met at a party might be content with their first name only; if they need witness a formal legal document, maybe all three names are needed.)

In other words, all the individual elements are treated collectively as my name.

However, there are limited circumstances where my names are might be a valid usage. For example:

Everyone in my class has been given several strange names by their parents. He’s called Mithridates, Cinnamon and Avoca. Her names are Gloriana and Periwinkle. My names are Citronella, Flump and Toto.
