ACTION COMMITTEE
Action Committee condemns the physical assault which ensued between a member of the Man O War of the campus branch and a fellow student in Fajuyi Hall of residence during the late hours of yesterday.
It remains an undefeatable fact and tradition that the tolerance of Great Ife students for cult-like behavior is not at its least merely, but at zero level of tolerance. We condemn the assault on student by the Man O War paramilitary. It should be pointed out that assaults on students by this group has been noted over the years on campus and has always been curtailed with the resilient spirits of students in maintaining a campus free of violence, bully and intimidation, and basically, to maintain zero tolerance for cultism and cult-like activities.
We believe that nobody is above the traditions and conventional laws of Great Ife community, and this has been asserted yesterday's evening by Greatest Fajuyans who stood their grounds to ensure adequate open moderation, prosecution of the Man O war culprit and justice for the victim.
We commend this radical and resilient spirit of students who also ensured the resistance of the School security's hypocritical intervention.
Awoites, Moremites, Angolans and other students must draw initiatives from this development and also organise democratically and massively to resist all forms of intimidations, oppressions and harassments from any individual, whether student, staff or any acclaimed authority that abuses the use of office.
It should be noted that evil only triumph when good men fail to do something. Students must always organize together for their liberation against oppressions. It is by this that we would realize that our strength and power lie in our mass, as displayed by Great Fajuyans yesterday.
We cannot disconnect the reigning terror, cultism, bullies, exploitations playing out on students both on campus and off-campus as reflections of the hypocritical attack on the students' union's independence by the university administration. It is only a vibrant and mass based organization or structure of the union that can shield us from these anomalies. We must continue to clamour against the attack on the rights of students to associate, we must as well continue to gradually organize ourselves to sustain a democratic and independent union.
A Union that is infiltrated by management stooges is capable of wrecking greater havoc on the students, this has been realized in the last administration of the union and recently in the rumored mismanagement of Hall dues by some hall of residences' executives such as ETF, Akintola hall etc as there is no monitoring by the mass of students and neither accountability to the mass of students who are the stakeholders.
Conclusively, as we write and round off examinations, we must continue to demand for better welfare in the living and learning conditions, as these conditions have direct implications on the academic performance of students.
The recent psychological abnormalities been displayed among students while reading and writing examinations cannot totally be disconnected from the 'mental struggle' form of education in an unpalatable living and learning condition.
